Will Reg E affect your business?
A new federal regulation (Reg E) requires consumers to “opt-in” to overdraft protection on their debit cards by August 15. Consumers who don’t opt-in may have transactions declined due to insufficient funds.
An overdraft occurs when consumers do not have enough money in their account to cover a transaction, but their financial institution pays it anyway.
Some consumers don’t realize the overdraft protection they currently utilize will change beginning August 15 if they haven’t “opted-in.” Thus, they may be surprised if their debit card transactions are denied.
If you have customers whose debit transactions are rejected after August 15, suggest they contact their financial institution to review their overdraft protection options.
It is unknown how this regulation will impact consumers and businesses. The best thing you can do is educate your customers if their transactions are denied after August 15.
